Issues For Gals N Boys

How To Smell Like Roses

It may seem like Mission Impossible, but not if you have the right tools on your hands. Issues For Girls & Boys shows you how to put together the best tool-kit for combating after-workout odours.

'Fess up, all of you who have gone from workout/Physical Education to your next workplace or lesson without doing so much as whipping off your soggy tee and putting on your uniform. It's fine if you are sitting among equally sweaty friends and colleagues. But what if a cool hunk happens to plonk down on the seat next to you? To ensure that he or she does not spend the next 45 minutes pinching that cute nose, or worse - go into a shock coma from being oerpowered by your after-workout scent, you need to smarten up on the subject of sweat (even if it's non-examinable).

Wet, Wet, Wet

Our bodies rely on minute air-conditioners called sweat glands to keep us cool. These are found under the skin's surface and number about 2.5 million. When we get hot under the collar, sweat glands produce sweat onto the surface of the skin. As sweat evaporates, it removes heat from our bodies. After a good workout session, the body produces even more sweat to help us cool down.

Whence the Whiff

Fresh sweat has no smell. It gets whiffy only when bacteria starts to act on the surface of the skin. The effect is especially obvious in areas like the armpits, the feet and the groin.

Simple Solutions

All is not lost, if you suspect that you are bearer of after workout odours. Protect yourself and the innocent in these easy-peasy ways:

Shower essentials (Anti-Bacterial Body Foam or Anti-Bacterial Soap) - If you are lucky enough to be in a school or workplace that has shower facilities, make good use of them (after all, you pay the monthly fees, somehow). Take a quick shower, using an anti-bacterial shower foam or soap.

Wet Anti-Bacterial Towelettes - No shower room? No worries. After getting off your sweat-drenched PE gear, towel yourself dry. Then give the offending areas a quick wipe with wet toewlettes.

Body Powder - Dust your body liberally with some talc to absorb moisture.

Deodorants Stick or Anti-Perspirant Roll-On - Apply some deodorant or anti-perspirant (if you suffer from wet sweat) before putting on your uniform. Use the unscented versions if you like. You should also do this before your workout.

Foot Powder - Don't forget your feet - change your socks and dust on some foot powder.

Body Spray or Deodorant Spray - For total fragrant success, finish with a scented body spray or eau de toilette/cologne.
