Unless you are totally clueless guy, it won't escape your notice that the word SNAG appears to be the buzzword lately. For those who're still clueless, that stands for "Sensitive New Age Guy". Naturally, girls are increasingly demanding that the guys around them behave like SNAGs. But what do girls really meanwhen they talk about SNAGs?
What is a SNAG?
Well, first things first, to us girls, a SNAG is defnitely anything but a sissified version of the male species. Instead, we view a SNAG as a guy who, while maintaining his boyishness, still stays in touch with his sensitive side and is not ashamed to show it. He believes in equality of the sexes, treats us girls nicely and shows us the respect we deserve. Not to forget, most girls will swoon at a SNAG because it shows the guy's sensitive side. How do you go about beocming one? Here are 10 steps to SNAGdom from the girls' point of view!
1. Never view girls as a guy's inferior
Chuck away the Neanderthal idea that girls are put on earth to cook and wash for the guys and recognise that we girls have equal standing with you guys. In other words, we want to be shown the same respect you would show other guys. Never belittle our ambitions and aspirations, never put us down to make yourself feel more superior and never ever draw a clear dividing line between girls' work, and guys' work. Yes, this means not making a girl clean yur mud-clogged soccer boots while you sprawl out on the couch and vegetate.
2. Act like a gentleman
All right, we know that a lot of you guys are terrible apprehensive about doing things like pulling a girl's chair out for her, because you fear being labelled an MCP. But really, most girls do still appreciate being treated like a lady now and then. Of course, we don't expect you guys to triple somersault just to reach the door before us so that you can hold it open. But we would appreciate it if you could lend a hand when you see us struggling with a whole lot of shopping bags, or volunteer to get us our food when you see us looking terribly worn-out from a overnight session of exam cramming. Keep the spirit of chivalry alive!
3. Get in touch with your feelings
The guy who openly expresses his feelings and emotions are no longer viewed as the sissy. Rather, he is seen as the SNAG who is not afraid of admitting he is capable of emotions. So the next time you feel sniffly watching sad movie scenes like Death Maul killing Qui-Gon Jinn, don't restrain those tears because you have every right to cry. Likewise, if you feel an overwhelming urge to tell a girl you love her, go ahead and let her know. Don't worry about looking foolish! Nothing endears us girls more to guys thean SNAGs who are willing to open up their tough steely exterior, to reveal to us their soft core of emotional vulnerability.
4. Stop using the words like 'Is it PMS again'?
Nothing riles us faster than having guys think that any perceived mood swings are brought on by PMS, because that basically signals a lack of effort on a guy's part to try to understand us. After all, just like you guys, we girls also encounter stuff that will put us in a lousy mood; a flunked history quiz, a quarrel with a best friend, a pet that died. To be a SNAG, therefore, do not be quick to blame anything on PMS.
5. Learn to listen to us when we talk!
Especially so if we are trying to communicate to you our thoughts and feelings. One of our main grouses about talking to non-SNAGs is that they simply don't listen, so we would love to have SNAGs behave differently from those others. Therefore, do pay some attention to what we have to say. You might become an even better SNAG in the process because you will gain an insight into how our minds work. And we girls do so love someone who truly cares to listen and takes the bother to understand us.
6. Not treating 'sorry' like a dirty word
When a SNAg realises he is in the wrong, he will not avoid making an apology. Even if he doesn't like the feeling of admitting his mistakes, he knows this is the right thing to do and he bravely does it. This shows a guy who values the friendship of the people around him and he will do anything within reasonable limits to maintain it.
7. Give us prority in your life
Of course we are not demanding that you put aside everything in your life and worship the ground we walk on. But let's say you have to make a choice between going alone to a birthday bash where your girl is not invited, and not going to the birthday bash but staying at home with her. A girl would want to be assured that you would rank staying at home with her more important than going to the bash without her. After all, we girls really admire SNAGs who put spending quality time with the girl over having fun without the girl.
8. Respect our ideas and opinions
Even if you hold different opinions from us and may not necessarily agree with our views, we really appreciate it when you givve us a chance to air our opinions and let you know what we are thinking. A SNAG is someone who realises that what a girl has to say is as important as what he himself has to say. And so he gives her an equal chance to speak, listens really attentively to her and does not impulsively jump in to rebut her views.
9. Keep your promises to us
It could be something as simple as calling when you said you would. Or it could be something as big as making a personal sacrifice on your part, like missing the Man U vs. Liverpool live telecast just because you promised the girl to turn up at her family reunion. We girls love it when you honour what is important to us by keeping your promises to us.
10. Finally, love us for what we are
A SNAG will not go out for superficial appearances. So do accept us, bad hair day, bad face day and all, and don't shun us like the plague just because we have been attacked by a bad case of the zits. And don't even think of making stupid jokes about beached whales when you see our mini-T looking a tad too snug. In our moments of insecurity, when we turn to you for confort, tell us that we look beautiful to you anyway, and do patiently repeat it as many times as it takes to convince us.
Of course, to the girls reading this, when your guy attempts to become a SNAG, do show your appreciation and encourage him. And, always treat him with the same respect you expect from the newly converted SNAG you have on your hands!
